Fafo image/bildeNew report: Street children in Mali and Ghana

6.09.2005
The Fafo researchers Anne Hatløy and Anne Huser have identified street children in two West African cities; Bamako in Mali, and Accra in Ghana. The main aims of the study was to give the characteristics of the street children population in the two cities, and to develop methodologies for difficult to reach populations, i.e. populations that are not found within household structures or schools. The report is the third in a series of working papers from a Fafo research program on trafficking and child labour in West Africa.arrowRead more about the report

What do we mean by trafficking?

1.09.2005
During a Fafo breakfast Wednesday 31 August, one of the conclusions was that the lack of a common Norwegian definition of human trafficking interferes with the effective realisation of anti-trafficking efforts. While the justice system has so far applied a high threshold in dealing with human trafficking cases, the actors working with assistance and protection have a low threshold. Researchers' views are based somewhere in the middle. This makes it difficult to transfer knowledge between the different levels. It can also create problems when the organisations providing assistance and the formal institutions disagree on who are entitled to protection and assistance. The Fafo report Taking Stock deals with these issues, in addition to conducting a critical review of selected literature on human trafficking for sexual exploitation.arrowMore about the Fafo breakfast (in Norwegian)arrowMore about the report Taking Stock (load down pdf file, 304k)arrow See Fafo in the press
