«Modernisation» of the government

The Norwegian newspaper Dagsavisen refers to new research from Fafo; about the restructuring of the government. At a press conference today the Norwegian Minister of Modernisation promised continuous restructuring. Ideas, Power and Multilateral Institutions

Fafo researcher Morten Bøås is together with SUM's Research director, Desmond McNeill, editor and author of the book Global Institutions and Development: Framing the World? (Routledge). The book is about multilateral institutions' impact on development, why particular role of ideas are taken up; how they travel within the system; and how they are translated into policy, modified, distorted or resisted. The book argues that ideas are used, knowingly or unknowingly, to promote interests or worldviews favoured by powerful states or institutions.arrowThe book is reviewed in International Studies Review.

Managing Director of the Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies Jon Hanssen-Bauer (see picture) has been engaged for one year from August 1st by the MFA, to assist in the implementation of their research strategy in the field of peace and reconciliation. He will advise on how the ministry best can stimulate research of relevance for that field, on how to strengthen the relevant competence in Norwegian research institutes, and on how to strengthen cooperation between such institutes in Norway and abroad. In its meeting on June 13, the Board of Directors for Fafo AIS constituted Deputy Managing Director Mark Taylor as Managing Director for the Institute during Jon's one-year absence

Fafo Directors Jon Hanssen-Bauer and Jon Pedersen were appointed guest professors at Nankai University in Tianjin, People's Republic of China. The appointment is a result of the cooperation between Fafo and the Nankai University Department in Yunnan, in connection with the living conditions survey of the Western regions of China. Wang Yuan and Wang Fenyu, two of the leaders at Fafo's main partner in China – the National Research Center for Science and Technology for Development (NRCSTD) – were also appointed guest professors at the university. Nankai University is considered as one of the ten best of China's 1,500 universities. More cooperation between Nankai, NRCSTD, and Fafo is planned.
