Successful annual meeting in Fafo's Forum on the
EU enlargement

The meeting was held at Oslo congress centre Thursday 26th of May,
with 270 registered participants. Subject for the day was; One year
after the EU enlargement. Visions, reality and policy for working
life and private business.

Fafo survey gives unique information about the living conditions
in Iraq

Fafo has cooperated with the Central Organisation for Statistics
and Information Technology (COSIT) of Iraq on this living condition
survey. Fieldwork was consulted in April-May, and August 2004. The
survey is the first since the war to cover all parts of Iraq. It
covers areas such as infant and child mortality, malnutrition, housing
and infrastructure, household economy, education and health. The
survey was funded by UNDP. Fafo researchers have authored three
reports. The study is refered to in various media worldwide.

Jon Hanssen-Bauer (Managing Director of Fafo Institute for Applied
International Studies) and Jon Pedersen (Deputy Managing Director)
have been appointed as guest professors at Lanzchou University of
Gansu Provinse in China. The university has 45,000 students, and
is an important partner for Fafo in the living conditions survey
of the Western regions of China. The two new professors were appointed
at a ceremony in Lanzchou by the President and vice-president of
the university. The university also appointed Managing Director
Dr Wang Yuan and Head of section for sustainable development Wang
Fenyu at the National Research Center for Science and Technology
for Development (NRCSTD) to professors. NRCSTD is Fafo's main partner
in China.

National statutory minium wage is not an appropriate mechanism
by which to protect Norwegian wages and collective agreements

This is the conlusion of a report by Håvard Lismoen og Torgeir
Aarvaag Stokke at Fafo. The report was distributed yesterday at
the national convention of the Norwegian confederation of Trade
Unions (LO). The EU enlargement on 1 May 2004 has contributed to
place the issue of introducing a national statutory minimum wage

Economies of Peace: Public Policy for Conflict-Sentive Business

The U.N.'s Global Compact has released this new report by Karen
Ballentine, a consultant to Fafo's New Security Programme, co-authored
with Virgina Haufler, University of Maryland. The report argues
that conflict-sensitive business practices requires practical policy
assistance from governments and multilateral organisations if they
to promote conflict prevention and limit the negative impacts of
business operations in societies in conflict. Read

Norwegian voluntary organisations' help to the poor

In a new report Fafo researchers Heidi Gautun, Jon Anders Drøpping
og Tone Fløtten have surveyed the voluntary organisations'
help to the poor. The report wil be presented today, at a conference
on poverty. The report is part of the work of Norwegian
Centre for Research on Poverty and Social Assistance (Fafo og
NOVA).

Fafo report on rehabilitation of trafficking victims

Fafo researcher Lise Bjerkan is the editor of this report, written
together with Biljana Simeunovic-Patic, Vesna Nikolic-Ristanovic
and Linda Dyrlid. The report presents the findings of a study related
to the identification, rehabilitation, and reintegration of victims
of trafficking for sexual exploitation, and it is based on fieldworks
and a series of interviews, primarily in Serbia but also in Moldova
