Business in Conflict Zones: Challenges and Options
15.11.2005
Mark Taylor, Managing Director at Fafo, has an article published
in the recently released Profiting from Peace; Managing the Resource
Dimension of Civil War, (IPA, Lynne Rienner, 2005). Entitled
"Regulating Business in Conflict Zones: Challenges and Options",
the article was co-authored with Leiv Lunde, ECON. The article maps
the policy continuum that has developed in response to the problem
of conflict trade and argues that the traditional "voluntary
versus madatory" approach of corporate social responsibility
is misleading. The book was edited by Karen Ballentine, now a consultant
to Fafo, and Heiko Nitzschke, formerly of the International Peace
Academy. |

Insecurity
and Development: The Rhetoric of the Failed State
12.10.2005
In this article in the September 2005 special edition of the European
Journal of Development Research, Fafo researchers Morten Bøås
and Kathleen Jennings argue that the utility of the "failed
state" paradigm favored by politicians and academics is undermined
by misguided assumptions on how states and state actors operate.
They argue that the concept of state failure is only useful in the
context of human security -- particularly insofar as it enables
analysts and policymakers to recognise and respond to the problem
of state recession. Read more here |
