Fafo report: Commerce, Crime and Conflict
04.09.2006
The report Commerce, Crime and Conflict. Legal Remedies for Private
Sector Liability for Grave Breaches of International Law, will
be launched on Wednesday 6 September at the Centre for Humanitarian
Dialogue, in the presence of the Special Representative of the UN
Secretary General on Business and Human Rights, Prof. John Ruggie.
This report confirms that businesses can be held accountable for
grave human rights abuses, such as genocide, war crimes and torture
as well as other crimes against humanity. Based on the surveys of
sixteen national legal systems, it maps ways in which international
criminal and humanitarian law has become more widely applicable
to business entities than previously thought. The surveys, sponsored
by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Canada,
provide a summary of how laws might apply in each of the 16 countries:
Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia,
Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Spain, Ukraine, the
United Kingdom and the United States. The launch will be attended
by the participating lawyers from a number of these countries.

In Armed Services, the second of Fafo's new reports on private military
