Transnational marriages and trafficking
23.01.2006
In a new project financed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion,
the Fafo researchers Guri Tyldum and May-Len Skilbrei will look
at marriages between Norwegian men and women from Thailand and Russia.
They will discuss how some women from developing and transitional
countries come to be more vulnerable to various forms for exploitation
in marriage, and suggest policies that can reduce these vulnerabilities.
An important aspect of the project will be to discuss possible delineations
in our understanding of trafficking in relation to transnational
marriages. The two researchers will map life histories and migration
experiences of different women that have married (or is going to
marry) Norwegian men, and their experiences will be analysed in
light of their access to networks and information, economic possibilities
and dependants at home, as well as the view of marriage and the
role of women in different social groups both in Norway and in their
home countries. The following questions will be asked: Is it possible
to talk of trafficking for marriage for Thai and Russian women in
Norway? How can policies be developed to protect the women from
exploitation in transnational marriages? Which women are able to
break out of marriages with exploitation and violence, and why?
And, what challenges do the women face if they choose to break out
of a marriage with a Norwegian man? |

 Little
migrants: Informal child migration from Moldova
19.01.2006
The Research Council of Norway is financing this joint project between
Fafo, Department of Social Anthropology (University of Oslo) ISF
and Prio. In Fafo's part of the project, Lise Bjerkan and Guri Tyldum
will explore the motives and mechanisms involved in child migration
from Moldova. The project will improve the understanding of the
Moldovan 'little migrants' both from their own perspectives and
the perspectives of their respective households, and ultimately
also society at large, by exploring the context wherein children
take on the role as economic actors and their experiences related
to this role. Data will be gathered on the local level, involving
qualitative interviews with children and their households. See

The
well educated employees continue to develop their skills at work
04.01.2006
Researcher Torgeir Nyen at Fafo says in Aftenposten today
that well educated employees continue to develop their skills at
work, while those who quit school early don't have the same positive
attitude to learning, and are less involved in skills development
at work. He emphasizes, though, that also poorly educated employes
tend to be motivated to learn at work places where people are expected
to develop their skills and provided with good learning opportunities
at the same time. The newly published report Livslang
læring i norsk arbeidsliv II (Lifelong learning in Norwegian
working life) contains data and analysis from The Learning Conditions
Monitor 2005, including data/analysis about learning conditions
for poorly educated, sources of learning at work and outcomes of
training and education. |

Hamas
in from the cold?
17.01.2006
This is the question at a Fafo breakfast 24 January. Yasser Najjar,
the new ambasadeur to the PLO-delegation in Norway, and Fafo researchers
Jon Pedersen and Gro Hasselknippe, will discuss the apporaching
polls. According to an opinion poll conducted by Fafo in December
2005, a majority wants to continue the ceasefire with Israel and
to end the Intifada. At the same time, however, many Palestinians
mean that violence against Israel is legitimate as long as occupation
prevails. The brakfast will be conducted in English. Read more and register
