The prostitution debate has been too focused on getting prostitutes off the street and out of sight, says Justice Minister Knut Storberget, speaking today at a Fafo seminar. Storberget was presented the new Fafo report on Nigerian women in prostitution in Norway, written by May-Len Skilbrei (pictured), Marianne Tveit and Anette Brunovskis. People's Republic of China visits Fafo

A delegation from The Ministry of Civil Affairs of the People's Republic of China visits Fafo on June 21. The delegation, headed by Vice-Minister Luo Pingfei comes to Fafo in order to discuss the Norwegian welfare model, as well as Fafo's work in the Western regions of China.

At a Fafo seminar this morning the researchers Morten Bøås and Anne Hatløy presented the recent reports from Fafo's research program on trafficking and child labour. Fafo has carried out several studies on children and young people in Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone in the period of 2003-2005, commisioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Fafo research director Torgeir Aarvaag Stokke has been appointed a member of the new national Equal Pay Commission. The commission will study steps that can be taken to reduce wage differences between men and women. Fafo and Forum for Development and Environment invites to an open conference 20 June on aid, conflict resolution, securioty and sustainable development, with cases from Sudan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Presenters from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sudan, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Fafo, University of Bergen, Norwegian People’s Aid and Norwegian Church Aid. The conference is part of the launch of the 2006 edition of the Reality of Aid report and open for all interested. Please register to Forum for Development and Environment. Fafo researchers Siri Ytrehus and Anders B. Fyhn have looked upon middle-aged and older people's wants for the future. They have asked today's 50- 60- and 70 years old what they think is a good house in old age. The report Bufast, Bjørvika and Benidorm is based on a nationwide survey, while the report Her vil jeg bo! Monday 12 June, the book Disarmament as Humanitarian Action: From Perspective to Practice, by J. Borrie & V. Martin Randin (eds) will be launched at a seminar in Palais des Nations, Geneva. The book is the second volume from the UNIDIR project, Disarmament as Humanitarian Action. Fafo Senior Adviser Christian H Ruge (pictured) will make a presentation together with Rosy Cave from UNIDIR on government-civil society cooperation in multilateral disarmament processes, based on his chapter in the book, "Mitigating the effects of armed violence through disarmament – counting the human costs".

New report on older workers and restructuring

Fafo researcher Tove Midtsundstad has contributed to a new report by the Centre for Senior Policy on senior citizens and the labour market. Midtsundstad has written a chapter on seniors, job restructuring and economic consequences for employers. On-the-job security compromised for East European workers
