Fafo
breakfast: Workplace environment and residents' rights in child
protection institutions

This Fafo breakfast meeting, co-hosted by NOVA, will present the
findings of two surveys from Norwegian child protection institutions.
The seminar is free and open to all, but please register your participation

interpreter

In this new web report from Fafo the researchers Hilde Haualand,
Jon Emil Natvig and Atle Ørsnes have studied the project
"Testing of sign laguage interpreter services via 3G cellphones".
They found that such interpreting gives undreamt of possibilities
for the deafs to participate in spontaneous and unplanned communication,
both with collegues and on other arenas.

Longing
for a better life

The longing for a better life rather than extreme poverty is what
brings women from Eastern Europe to the Norwegian sex market. This
is the findings in a new report Fafo researcher May-Len Skilbrei
(pictured) has written together with Irina Polyakova (project assistant).
They have interviewed 15 prostitutes from Eastern Europe, who tell
about their way to and life as prostitutes in Norway. The report
"My life is too short; I want to live now" is published
by The Department of Criminology and the Sociology of Law at Oslo
University.

Living
conditions in Oslo 2006

This year Fafo will conduct its second living conditions survey
for the city of Oslo. The survey will focus both on present living
conditions and changes in conditions from Fafo's prior survey in
1994. Fafo director Jon Hippe heads up the project, with support
from Fafo researchers Anne Britt Djuve, Magne Bråthen and
Gudmund Hernes. The project is done in co-operation with Tor Dølvik
at Agenda and Kåre Hagen at BI Norwegian School of Management. |

contribution to new UN book on Disarmament and Humanitarian Action

Fafo Senior Adviser Christian H Ruge (pictured) has contributed
with a chapter to a new book from United Nations Institute for Disarmament
Research UNIDIR. The book Disarmament
as Humanitarian Action from Perspective to Practice
is published by a UNIDIR research project aimed at solving the present
deadlock in multilateral disarmament negotiations. Christian H.
Ruges chapter Mitigating the effects of armed violence
through disarmament counting the human costs explores
how empirical research can assist multilateral disarmament and arms
control negotiations. The book will be launched in Geneva on 12
June. |

coverage in Norwegian working life 2004/2005.

Fafo report on care needs for people suffering with mental health
problems

Fafo researcher Inger Lise Skog Hansen examines the living conditions
of persons with mental health problems, with a special focus on
addiction. She finds that stable living conditions, close support,
and extensive follow-up are key components of quality care.

Conference on EU enlargement, in Oslo 1 June

The conference is organised by Fafo's Forum on EU enlargment, and
take as its point of departure developments in the European and
Norwegian labour markets following EU enlargement two years ago.
New research by Fafo on the use of labour from Eastern Europe will
be presented, there will be speeches by, among others, Jan Cremers
(coordinator at the European Institute for Construction Labour Research),
Maciej Duszczyk, Deputy Director, Office of the Committee for European
Integration, Poland and the Latvian author Laima Muktupavela (pictured),
followed by a panel debate on the regulations of wage and working
conditions and possible actions against social dumping. The meeting
will be held in Oslo Congress Centre Thursday 1st of June. Simultaneous
