Morten BøåsPolitical violence and asymmetric warfare

September 2009
Fafo-researcher Morten Bøås has written the chapter «Terminology associated with political violence and asymmetric warfare» in the book Domestic Terrorism in Africa: Defining, Addressing and Understanding its Impact on Human Security. The book is published by Institute for Security Studies (ISS). In the aftermath of 11 September 2001, the Western world has become increasingly concerned with ‘failed states’ in the global south. Bøås argues that it is important to prevent international terrorist networks from gaining ground on the African continent, but to reach this goal the US and its main allies need to rethink their approach to conflict and insurgency groups in Africa. Making plans for Liberia

Morten Bøås has also published the article "Making plans for Liberia – a trusteeship approach or good governance?" in Third World Quarterly, 2009, 30 (7): 1329-1341. Bøås argues that the international community's 'plans’ for Liberia after the peace agreement in 2003 have shown signs of trusteeship. What is needed now that Liberia has a new democratically elected government is, according to Bøås, a more pragmatic approach to fight corruption. Pil Third World Quarterly

New Fafo-report on the Norwegian au pair scheme

Portrett: Cecilie Øien20 August 2009
In the new report On equal terms?, Fafo-researcher Cecilie Øien has evaluated the Norwegian au pair scheme. The main objectives of the evaluation have been to uncover whether (or not) the scheme is practised according to its original intentions, and whether the changes introduced to the scheme in 2007 have generated the desired effects. The basic aim of the evaluation has thus been to give a comprehensive assessment of the au pair scheme, and furthermore to see whether additional changes are needed other than those already put in place in 2007. The report describes the strategies and motivations of au pairs and host families, and discusses how contact is established between them. Pil Download the report On equal terms?

1 July 2009
In the paper Non-Judicial Remedies in Norway for Corporate Social Responsibility Abroad Fafo-researcher Marion Marmorat gives an overview of and insight into the main trends of policy work and research on state-based non-judicial mechanisms as background to a public policy discussion of non-judicial mechanisms in Norway. It focuses on some existing models and practices adopted by non-judicial mechanisms that engage directly with corporations in an effort to assess and resolve human rights grievances and other complaints relevant to CSR issues. This paper is meant as a contribution to the discussion on the extraterritorial responsibilities of Norwegian companies and the non-judicial mechanisms that might provide access to remedies to victims of corporate misconduct.
