Arne Grønningsæter Bjørn NulandNew Fafo-report: Lesbians and Gays in Sápmi

29 October 2009
Gay and lesbian Sámi make up a minority group that up until recently has been invisible in research and public policy. As a result, very little information and knowledge exist about the living conditions of this group. The Fafo researchers Arne Backer Grønningsæter and Bjørn Richard Nuland's aim in the report Lesbians and Gays in Sapmi. A narrative approach to explore living conditions, is to provide knowledge of how gay and lesbian Sámi experience life today. The project has used a narrative approach to study the living conditions of this group, and by telling the life stories of the informants, the project aims to make gay and lesbian Sámi more widely visible. The report shows that the Sámi culture is an important part of the informants’ identities. It has not been easy for them to cope with a multiple minority status, and although they have as a result experienced social exclusion and discrimination, they appear proud of both being Sámi and of being lesbian or gay. Making Ends Meet: Gender and Household Coping Strategies in the West Bank

23 October 2009
Since 2000, the hostilities in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have re-emerged and escalated, and mobility restrictions on people and goods remain in place. The Palestinian economy remains fettered, Palestinian households in the West Bank are becoming poorer and more indebted. In a new report Fafo-researcher Laura E. Mitchell investigates how Palestinians are adapting at the household level both by focusing specifically on the gender differences within households, and by examining how the coping strategies employed affect the household’s resource base. While most households attempt to manage by reducing their consumption, many are also depleting their resource base. In addition to literature from the Middle East which views household coping strategies as forms of resistance during times of crisis, the report draws on one hundred individual and group interviews in five communities in the West Bank. Marjan Nadim Hanne C. KavliNew Fafo-report on family practices and gender equality in immigrated families

7. October 2009
In the report Family practices and gender equality in immigrated families the Fafo researchers Hanne C. Kavli og Marjan Nadim describe the main features of how family life is established and organised in a selection of immigrated groups in Norway with a specific focus on issues relevant for gender equality. Some of the questions asked are: When and how do people establish families? How does women’s participation in the labour market vary in different phases of family life? What are the attitudes towards mothers and paid work on the one hand, and fathers and caring responsibilities on the other? How is the responsibility for domestic work, children and the household economy divided within the family? And what are the attitudes towards gender equality? The study is based on a combination of survey data, register data and qualitative interviews. There were 1800 respondents in the survey with backgrounds from Norway, Iran, Iraq, Vietnam and Pakistan, in addition to people born in Norway of two immigrated parents from Pakistan. The findings demonstrate that attitudes and practices concerning family life vary both between and within groups. For instance, there is a marked development in family practices and attitudes towards those that dominate in Norway when comparing women and men born in Norway of Pakistani parents with those who emigrated from Pakistan.
