The rapid economic and political changes during the last ten years have created a strong demand for information on living conditions in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Reliable data are required for the formulation of well-targeted national social policies as well as for integration into the European social policy and labour market framework. This web site gives updated and policy-relevant information on living conditions and social policy in the Baltic countries. We portray historical trends in poverty and welfare as well as the political and institutional responses. The web site has been made available by project funding from the Norwegian Research Council and forms part of a joint programme of Fafo and the universities from Latvia and Tartu, Estonia. Our academics have gathered and documented living conditions and welfare through several projects from the early 1990s. The final conference for the project "Poverty, social assistance and social inclusion developments in Estonia and Latvia in a comparative perspective" was held in Riga, may 2006. The presentations from the conference can be found here. Relevant material to be found on each section below. See also Fafo publication list on the Baltic states Fafo |
