Presentation of a living condition survey on Internally Displaced Persons
(IDPs) in Northern-Uganda
At this Fafo-breakfast the 6th of December the fafo-researchers Morten
Bøås and Anne Hatløy presented the report The Northern
Uganda Internally Displaced Persons Profiling Study which is conducted
by Fafo in cooperation with UNDP, is the first systematic survey on the
Northern Ugandan IDPs' living conditions. The report shows intolerable
human conditions:
- 1.3 million people live in camps
- The camp residents are extremely poor, completely dependent on development
aid
- The camps are attacked several times weekly and civilians outside
camps are abducted
- The IDPs are constantly afraid, both inside and outside the camps
- 55 percent of IDPs believe the situation will be even worse next year
- Most IDPs are very young, more then 50 percent are under 15
- 25 percent of the children have lost one or two parents
In the panel were, Jens Petter Kjemprud from The Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, Marit Sørheim, from the Norwegian Refugee Council and
Aina Bergstrøm from Redd Barna
