René Lemarchand, University of Florida

As the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its repercussions in the Great Lakes Region continues Fafo hosted a seminar with Professor René Lemarchand (University of Florida).

Professor Lemarchand is ranked among the top Africanist political scientists of his generation, and as demonstrated in his latest book The Dynamics of Violence in Central Africa (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009) his in-depth knowledge of the region is immense. Professor Lemarchand addressed current issues in his lecture as well as he focused on the historical and social forces behind the cycles of bloodshed in Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC.

Professor René Lemarchand fra Universitetet i Florida har fulgt utviklingen i det som nå heter D.R. Kongo siden de løsrev seg fra Belgia for 50 år siden. Han var denne uken i Oslo for å holde et foredrag for Fafo om situasjonen i østlige Kongo og nabolandene. - Det er ingen reell stat i Kongo, sier professoren og mener det er roten til mange av problemene i landet. Han hevdet på foredraget hos Fafo at Rwandas hær kunne ha gått gjennom hele landet i løpet av uker, og brukte det som eksempel på den svake staten i Kongo.
