Poverty reduction strategies, Social grants, HIV/AIDS and the roll-out of HAART in South AfricaAfternoon seminar at Fafo August 24th, 13:30–15:30, Borggata 2B, Oslo We will present results from a project conducted in cooperation between Fafo and University of Cape Town, AIDS and Society Research Unit. Many people living with HIV (PLWH) in South Africa received disability grants prior to the Anti-retrovirals (ARVs) roll-out in 2004. (HAART = Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy). When ARVs improve their health, they stand to lose the grant. The presentation will explore three main issues; whether PLWH faced trade-offs between treatment adherence and grant termination, the role of the medical doctors, as well as some gender aspects of living with HIV in South Africa. We find that while the ARV roll-out is important, it is crucial to provide additional material resources, in order make ‘positive living’ a reality. It is also important to understand that testing and disclosure have different implications for men and women. It requires tailored interventions to challenge stigma and encourage both men and women to test.
