Making cooperation attractive: Post-referendum relations between Egypt and Sudan

Policy workshop in Oslo, 14 October 2010

The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), Fafo and the Norwegian Peacebuilding Centre (Noref) invite you to a one-day policy workshop on the relations between Egypt and the Sudan. As a major regional power, Egypt’s constructive participation is required for a peaceful and successful political transition in the Sudan. With the referendum concerning the future of Southern Sudan only months away, it is urgent to discuss policy options in Sudan-Egypt relations. It is important for the future development of the whole region that Egypt finds a way to continue a constructive interaction with political forces in both Northern and Southern Sudan. The topic of the workshop is the many challenges facing Egypt and the Sudan (North and South) both before and after the 2011 referendum:

  • What possible scenarios may result from the referendum process?
  • How will the referendum affect security and stability in the region?
  • In which ways will regional Nile politics affect and be affected by the political transition in the Sudan?

These questions are discussed in panels, where commissioned papers are presented and commented on by scholars from the Sudan, Egypt, UK and Norway. In each session the floor will be opened for discussion.
The workshop is part of the PRIO-Fafo project ‘Egypt and Self-Determination for Southern Sudan’, which is funded by Noref.
