Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies

Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies conducts policy-related research at the international level, concentrating primarily on countries undergoing substantial structural changes through development, transition and conflict. In each of our work areas, and within each of these international communities of practice, the institute's researchers are recognized as among the leading researchers in their fields.

This applied research aims to be engaged, innovative, advanced methodologically, rigorous, professional and ethical. Ideally, our research is “research that matters”, in particular to people most affected by conflict, transition and development as well as policy makers concerned with those processes.

Our activities are concentrated in the following research areas:

Living Conditions and Adaptation

Conflict and Belonging

China

The Middle East

Migration

Our research aims to produce a range of outputs

• Baseline analysis and policy recommendations based on the qualitative or quantitative data generated by empirical research.

• Datasets on living conditions based on international standards and designed to address specific information needs about a country, region or topic.

• Country and sector analysis, as well as evaluation and monitoring studies, for use in planning or improving development, peace-building or humanitarian assistance.

• Technical assistance, training and capacity building in research methods and analytical tools.

• Publications and/or participation in scientific or academic publication and conferences.

• Management of, or participation in, policy formulation processes.

• Participation in the public debate via events, and interventions in print and electronic media.

This work involves both the implementation of empirical investigations – both quantitative and qualitative - and a close engagement in policy formulation and with the end-users of the institute's research.

The Institute’s activities are pursued on the basis of commitments to academic freedom and social justice, with attention to the people and authorities in the countries where we work, international civil society and social partners in Norway and abroad, and Norwegian foreign and development policy.
