Social and Economic Conditions in East Timor

The project aimed at providing a baseline description of social and economic conditions in East Timor at the time of the referendum on independence in August 30, 1999. The report describes the natural resource base and economy, population, health. education, poverty, governance, infrastructure and development aid.

It has been extensively used by the East Timorese government, international organisations and aid agencies in planning for an independent future.

The project was carried out by the International Conflict Resolution Program at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, New York together with Fafo.
