Fafo has been conducting activities in China since 1994, and has developed significant cooperation with Chinese institutions. Its research in the countryfocuses on social impacts, vulnerability, coping and adaptation. In recent years, a considerable part of our activities have dealt with natural disasters and environmental aspects of development.
Fafo operates a regional office in Beijing. The office is located at the premises of Fafo’s long-standing partner institution, China Academy of Science and Technology for Development (CASTED, formerly NRCSTD). CASTED is the research center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and has as its mission to implement research and documentation projects of relevance for the development of policy.Fafo and CASTED have cooperated on a number of projects, such as an unprecedentedly large scale survey of living conditions for households in Western China, a rapid assessment surveyof areas affected by the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and long-term follow-up studies of post-disaster reconstruction and development (lenke).
Fafo also has an agreement with China’s Central Party School to conduct scholarly cooperation focusing on what is often referred to as the “Nordic Model” of social organization. Apart from this, Fafo has cooperated with the Central Finance and Economy University in Beijing, Nankai University(especially their Yunnan institute in Kunming), and Lanzhou University. In 1994,Fafo participated in establishing an academic cooperation agreement between Tibetan and Norwegian Universities. This agreement led to the establishment of the Network for University Cooperation Tibet-Norway.
