Capacity Building in Applied Social Science Research in Tibet

Through a series of training courses in empirical research, Fafo participates in strengthening the capacity of social scientists in Tibet to conduct empirically based research. We have carried out two training courses in applied empirical research iin Lhasa, covering among other things basic statistical analysis, survey design, semi-structured interviews and basic introduction to qualitative data collection and interpretation, use of software for statistical analysis and presentation. The training courses have been conducted in cooperation with Tibet Academy of Social Science (TASS), but researchers from a number of other institutions have also taken part.

Through the project we wish to build up a group of social scientists in Tibet that are able to carry out high quality surveys and other empirical research independently. Our aim is that this empirical research will be used as a base for social reporting and as input to policy planners in the region. An important additional aim of the project is to strengthen contacts between researchers from different research institutions in Tibet, as well as between Tibetan and Norwegian researchers.
