The Baltic region

Fafo's work in the Baltic countries goes back to 1989, when the first Living Conditions Survey was initiated in Lithuania, making Fafo the first Western institution to conduct a large scale social survey in one of the countries of the former Eastern Bloc, at a time when the Soviet state still existed. This survey was followed up by the 1994 NORBALT living conditions surveys in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and by NORBALT II, in 1999. The living conditions surveys have led to a broad array of other projects, on poverty and social security, labour migration etc. Fafo has cooperated with a number of research and public institutions in the region, and is taking part in an extensive European research network.
