Central and Eastern Europe

Fafo's research activities in Central and Eastern Europe started in 1989, with the initiation of the first level of living survey in Lithuania, making this the first study of social conditions to be performed by a Western research establishment within what was then still the Soviet Union. In the following period, Fafo has conducted a series of similar studies in all the Baltic countries as well as western Russia, documenting social development in the transition period. This research effort has largely been conducted within the framework of the NORBALT project, which has received widespread international acclaim. Drawing on the comprehensive base of empirical data which has been established, Fafo has also engaged in specialised regional studies of poverty, social assistance systems and environmental cooperation, as well as comparative studies of the Baltic countries.
