Lifestyles and health in the Barents RegionIn cooperation with the Institute of Economical Problems in Apatity and NIBR (Alta branch), Fafo is conducting a project examining the causes of the deteriorating health condition in the Russian population. Emphasis is on lifestyle related diseases and the role of public health institutions in informing about and preventing this type of disease. Between 1990 and 1994 there was a mortality increase in the Russian Federation
that is unparalleled in the peacetime experience of 20th-century industrialised
countries. In these four years life expectancy for Russian men and women
declined from 64 and 74 years to 58 and 71 years respectively. The high
mortality rates have been explained with reference to both lifestyle (high
rates of tobacco and alcohol consumption, poor nutrition etc.), and institutional
factors (deterioration of medical and healthcare services) (Notzon et
al: 1998). In the project we will present a health profile of Apatity
city and one nearby village. Focus will be on attitudes to and knowledge
about prevention and treatment of disease, nutrition and healthy living
in general, among ordinary inhabitants, healthcare personnel and representatives
of the public administration. At this stage it will not be a goal to register
the scope of such health related problems, but rather try to uncover the
underlying causes or mechanism this mortality increase is connected with.
The report (in English and Russian) will be published in the summer of
2002. Results
