Environment and Living Conditions on the Kola Peninsula

This study was implemented in 1997, and forms a follow-up to the study of living conditions in the same region conducted by Fafo in 1992. Social conditions in the region is compared to the 1992 baseline, and describes developments over the intermediate five-year period. In addition, the study comprised an in-depth investigation of the perception of environmental hazards, in particular ionising radiation from the many nuclear installations - both military and civilian - on the peninsula.

The survey consisted of household interviews with 2,000 households in Murmansk city, Pechenga municipality, Apatity municipality and Kandalaksha municipality. Interviews were conducted in April and May 1997. The study was conducted in co-operation with the University of Oslo, The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority and Murmansk State Statistical Committee.
