JordanThe first initiative to the longstanding cooperation between Fafo and Jordan was taken in 1992. At that time the Fafo survey on living conditions in the West Bank and Gaza was underway, and Jordanian delegates to the Refugee Working Group of the Multilateral Peace Talks in the Middle East suggested that the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan could be interested in a similar study covering the refugees in Jordan. Fafo signed a contract for such a study with the Jordanian Ministry of Planning in February 1993. The project to study living conditions in Jordan was launched two years later, in cooperation with UNICEF in Amman, as it took time to mobilize the necessary financial resources. Norway and Canada co-sponsored the project, and it was agreed to enlarge the scope of the project to map the living conditions of the total population living in the Kingdom, not only the Palestinian refugees. The project was implemented by the Department of Statistics of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan visited Fafo in April 2000 together with His Majesty King Harald V of Norway. After this visit, Fafo decided to establish its regional office for the Middle East in Amman. Fafo uses this office to entertain closer contact with the authorities and with partners, as well as with local research institutions, in Jordan, in Syria, in Lebanon, as well as in other countries in the region.
