The Occupied Palestinian Territory (West Bank and Gaza Strip)

Fafo’s research in the occupied Palestinian territories started out with the 1991 survey of living conditions, parallel to the secret Palestinian-Israeli negotiations (Heiberg and Øvensen eds. 1993). Much of the early work was centered around statistics on Palestinian refugees, and Fafo initiated cooperation with the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) on the collection and analysis on demographic data on the West Bank and Gaza Strip (Pedersen 2000; Pedersen, Randall and Khawaja eds. 2001; Dalen and Pedersen 2004; Khawaja and Randall 2006). Statistics and analysis for use in Palestinian planning and socio-economic development were produced (Tiltnes 1998, Pedersen and Hooper ed. 1998; Hooper 1999). In addition, the statistical material was used by the Palestinian side in peace talks with regional partners.

One year after the outbreak of the second Intifada in 2000, Fafo, with funding from UNSCO (UN’s Special Co-ordinator Office), conducted a qualitative study of four Palestinian locations (Jericho, Beit Furik and Rantis in the West Bank and in Gaza city) to map out the effects of the conflict on people’s ability to provide for themselves (Pedersen, Christophersen, Endresen and Sletten 2001; Pedersen, Christophersen and Sletten 2001; Egset and Endresen 2001). A follow-up study, focusing on people’s coping strategies after yet another year of crisis and newly established closures by the Israeli forces, was conducted in 2002 (Sletten and Pedersen 2003). In the spring 2007, Fafo returned to the same four sites for the third time and examined how people were managing their lives after more than six years of conflict with Israel and a turbulent year marked by internal strife and fiscal sanctions of the Hamas government (Hasselknippe and Tveit 2007).

Fafo has implemented nine opinion polls in the West Bank and Gaza Strip between September 2005 and March 2011. In addition to capturing Palestinian views on political issues, these surveys also include data on socio-economic conditions.
