Coping with Conflict - Palestinian Communities Two Years Into the Intifada

The project “Coping with conflict” is a follow-up of the first round of case studies in the “Paying a Price” project. This second project studies how Palestinian households in the West Bank and Gaza Strip have adapted to conflict and closure, and in particular how they try to balance income and expenditures on a household level, describing the varying strategies adopted. Fieldwork for the second project was carried out in November and December 2002, in the same four localities chosen in 2001.

The project was commissioned by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Paying a price - Coping with closure

The project "Paying a price" comprises four case studies of selected localities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the Israeli-Palestinian confrontations in 2001. A particular feature of these confrontations has been "closure", which means Israeli restrictions on Palestinian movement of persons or goods across the border between the West Bank or Gaza Strip and Israel, and also internally within the Occupied Territory. The purpose of this study was to understand how the closure of the Occupied Palestinian Territories affects the economy and daily life of the people in these communities, and how they cope with the situation.

The four localities were Gaza City and Jericho City, and two villages in the West Bank: Rantis and Beit Furik. The project has resulted in three reports: A Gaza report, Jericho report, and village report.

The project was commissioned by the United Nations Special Coordinator's Office (UNSCO), which is based in Gaza.
