Poverty in the Middle East and North Africa

In 1998 a project group was set up at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Sweden for the purpose of analysing the political, economic and social conditions in the Middle East and North Africa. The main aspects to be reviewed were the importance of the region to Sweden and Europe in terms of security, the prospects for democratization, economic trends and trade patterns, as well as the role of development cooperation. The task, the purpose of which was to provide supporting data for Sweden's policies in the region, was completed in the autumn of 1999 with the publication of a main study, as well as a series of special studies focusing on specific matters relevant to the overall review. This study is issue no. 12 in the series of special studies, providing a broad review of the level and causes of poverty in the region. The study examines five country cases in more detail (Yemen, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan and Tunisia).
