Magnitude and characteristics of working children in Syria

The main object of this project was to shed light on the magnitude of children's participation in the labour force in Syria. Furthermore, it aimed at describing the link between children's work and a number of background factors, such as age, gender, education, socio-economic status and place of residence. The project output was a report to UNICEF, Syria, which also funded the project. Syria's Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) and the State Planning Commission were Fafo's partners.
The analysis was based on data from the 2000 Syria Internal Migration Survey (SIMS), interviewing more than 20,000 households and conducted by the University of Damascus and CBS in collaboration with Fafo. As the report shows, in that year there were more than 600,000 employed children aged 10-17 in Syria. They were inclined to work long hours for little pay, and the vast majority of them were not enrolled in school.

The project is completed.
