Determination of a poverty line in Haiti

Carried out in November 2001, the project developed a poverty line for Haiti based on data from household income and expenditure surveys of 1986/87 and 1999/2000. The method used was to calculate the nutritional value of a food basket derived from the household expenditure surveys, and then estimate an absolute poverty line as the expenditure needed to obtain a diet that fulfil the energy needs. To this was then added the value of non-food expenditures at the poverty line. Using this method it was found that poverty in Haiti appears to have decreased between 1987 and 2000: The percentage of the population below the poverty line was 59 in 1987 and 48 in 2000. UNDP (Haiti) financed the project.
