Fafo’s research programme in the Middle East and North Africa region aims to identify the main dynamics of conflict and peace. We place special emphasis on living conditions, how ordinary people cope with and are affected by conflict, and how they contribute to social and political dynamics.
Fafo is active in Sudan, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan, amongst other countries. In addition to our two local offices in Gaza City and Bethlehem, we cooperate with a number of partner institutions in these countries, including state organizations and NGOs. We regularly carry out research and activities for international organizations, including national Governments, United Nations agencies, bilateral donors and the World Bank.

Fafo conducts large scale living condition surveys, coping studies and research on the role and influence of youth and religious ideology in political dynamics. Our ambition is to identify and study emerging social and political trends on the grassroots level irrespective of their orientation.
Recent examples include the growth of the Salafi movement and the political potential of comics and youth magazines in Egypt.
Fafo has also been involved in the design and evaluation of international assistance to the region, including in Iraq, Sudan, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. Our evaluations focus on assistance given for humanitarian purpose, and post-conflict recovery and transformation.
