Pensions, welfare and senior employees

At Fafo we study policies targeting older workers, and how such policies affect older workers’ labor market participation and retirement behavior. We apply a wide range of methods and theories, and collaborate with national and international colleagues.


The main goals of our research are:


1. To describe the public attitudes towards the elderly and older workers


2. To describe the prevalence of policies and measures targeting older workers in Norway


3. To describe and analyze differences in attitudes, involvement and use of measures among establishments


4. To contribute to a better basis for policies targeting older workers among establishments and organizations


5. To analyze the effects of the different measures and interventions targeting older workers


6. To compare and explain national differences in involvement around the elderly and differences in employment rates among older workers.


We apply a wide range of data sources and methods, and favor mixed methods. Our expertise covers both qualitative and quantitative approaches. We do case studies, normative process research and action research. We also develop and analyze surveys targeting both employers and employees, and we use registry data and linked survey and register data.


We do causal analyses to measure the effects of changes in regulations, the introduction of special measures or interventions, and analyze older workers’ labor market participation and retirement behaviour.


We try to conduct comparative research, thus knowledge on retirement systems and reforms in other countries is important.
