The overarching aim of the project is to gather knowledge on how male- and female-dominated industries currently facilitate work–family balance. The project will examine how organizations enable employees to have a family life with (gender-equal) childcare responsibilities. It will also shed light on the challenges faced by both employers and employees in relation to work–family balance.
The project will address three overarching research questions:
- How do male- and female-dominated industries facilitate a family life with (gender-equal) childcare responsibilities?
- What challenges do employers and employees experience in relation to work–family balance?
- How are employees’ opportunities for work–family balance influenced by different structural conditions (such as provisions for caregiving and family responsibilities, parental leave, working time arrangements, job demands, and the design of pay and bonus systems)? How do these conditions manifest in selected male- and female-dominated industries, and how do they affect employees’ opportunities for work–family balance?
The following industries/occupations are included in the study:
- Manufacturing
- Construction
- Health, care and nursing, and technical services in the municipal sector
- Early childhood education (kindergartens)
- Professions within finance, law, consulting, and IT
- Private service sector: cleaning, catering, hospitality, freight transport, and retail
