Fafo seminar Launch of special issue in Nordic Welfare Research

Nordic street-level integration work

Fafo invites you to the launch of the special issue Nordic Street-Level Integration Work, published in the journal Nordic Welfare Research | Nordisk välfärdsforskning. This seminar will highlight how street-level bureaucracy theory contributes to understanding integration practices in the Nordic welfare context.

  • Fruit and bakery
  • Coffee/tea
  • Launching new research

Guest editors for this edition are Fafo researchers Silje Andresen and Maria G. Volckmar-Eeg. The special issue includes contributions from researchers in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway.

At this seminar you will learn how frontline workers interpret and practice policies in different welfare institutions.

The Nordic countries are known for their universal and inclusive welfare states. Integration of migrants is essential for the sustainability and legitimacy of these systems. While much research has focused on national migration and integration policies, the actual implementation happens at the street level — in everyday encounters between street-level workers and newcomers.

A special issue of Nordic Welfare Research | Nordisk välfärdsforskning is now being launched, exploring the street-level dimension of integration work across the Nordic countries. All six articles from the special issue will be presented at the seminar. Through empirical and theoretical contributions, the issue highlights how policy is put into practice, how street-level workers navigate complex welfare landscapes, and how their discretionary practices shape integration outcomes.

The seminar is organized by a Nordic network of researchers within the field of Street-Level Integration Work. The network is coordinated by Fafo. Read more about the project: Nordic Street-Level Integration Work
