How can collaboration improve career guidance in schools?

Counties and schools across Norway are testing new ways of collaborating on career guidance. Fafo, Samfunnsøkonomisk Analyse and OsloMet are examining how different models of collaboration work in practice and what other schools and counties can learn from these experiences.

Students face a wide range of opportunities and major transitions when making choices about education and work. Good career guidance can help them navigate these choices. Through a new grant scheme, twelve counties are testing various approaches to collaboration on career guidance in schools.

The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) has commissioned Fafo, Samfunnsøkonomisk Analyse and OsloMet to follow these initiatives and evaluate the experiences gained. We will map out the projects and what they aim to achieve, examine how the different models work in practice and the challenges they encounter, identify approaches that produce good results, and the role of local conditions.

The research will provide insight into how collaboration relates to the quality of career guidance, students’ access to guidance, and what they gain from it.

The research includes document analysis, participation and observation at experience-sharing events and seminars, as well as interviews with stakeholders and students. This will allow us to follow developments over time and compare experiences across projects. The project will produce knowledge about effective forms of collaboration about career guidance, and the conditions under which successful approaches can be transferred to other schools and counties.
